Tiger Errors Costly in Loss
Five errors proved costly as Doane fell to Cal State-San Marcos 5-2 on Sunday afternoon at the SunWest Tournament in Orange, Calif. Doane fell to 7-4 on the season while the Cougars, a first-year program, improved to 4-17.
The Tigers struck first in the bottom of the first inning. Joy Vasa hit a solo home run with one out to give Doane the early lead.
The Cougars came back with two runs in the third inning. Erica Coelho led off the inning with a walk. Danielle Tucker followed with a sacrifice bunt attempt. Alyssa Ledon committed a throwing error allowing Tucker to reach first base and Coelho advanced to third. With one out, Amanda Sanchez picked up an infield single to load the bases. Elizabeth Bush provided the scoring when she doubled to center field, scoring two runs.
Doane rallied in the fourth inning and scored a run to tie the game 2-2. Ledon singled and advanced to second base on a fielding error by the right fielder. With Julie Yost pinch running, Jennifer Montoya singled to short left field. Yost scored from second but Doane stranded two runners to end the inning.
CSUSM responded with two runs in the fifth inning to take the lead for good. Coelho hit a solo home run to lead off the inning. Tucker singled, stole second and advanced to third on a throwing error by Ledon. Melissa Lerno hit a sacrifice fly to score Tucker.
In the top of the seventh inning, CSUSM collected an insurance run. Coelho reached on an error to open the inning and later scored on a throwing error.
Megan Steele (3-2) took the loss for Doane, allowing two earned runs over seven innings. She allowed eight hits and walked one while striking out three.
The Tigers were limited to four hits for the game. Mindy Nguyen, Ledon and Montoya all singled while Vasa had the only extra base hit, a home run. Nguyen picked up her fourth stolen base of the season.
The Tigers will face Augsburg College (MN) later today. Augsburg is 1-3 entering the SunWest Tournament.
