Tenth-ranked Sterling College dominated from start to finish as they topped the Tigers, 84-43, in Sterling, Kansas, on Monday evening. The loss dropped the Tigers to 1-2 while Sterling is 2-0. The two teams will meet again on Saturday at the Concordia Cattle Classic in Seward.
The two squads exchanged baskets in the opening minutes with the game tied at 8-all. Sterling then went on a 30-2 run over an eight minute stretch to take a 38-10 lead. Doane ended the half on a 9-4 run to cut the score to 46-21 at halftime.
Sterling opened the second half with a 10-0 run and picked up their largest lead of the game, 83-37, with a minute remaining. Doane received a pair of three-point baskets from Kalen Carlson to close out the scoring for the Tigers.
Kristine Ortmeier led the team with 13 points and Madara Upeniece added 10 points for Doane. Carlson posted a team-high six rebounds and four assists.
Doane was plagued in the game by shooting 28.3-percent from the floor and 28 turnovers.
Sterling received 26 points and nine rebounds from Megan Patrick and 16 points from Laura Patrick.
The Tigers will face No. 15 Kansas Wesleyan on November 12 at Seward in the Cattle Classic.
