Stop Day Tradition

Community service and giving is the main theme of this year’s Stop Day celebration.

Doane's administration and Student Congress made tremendous efforts to bring back the original purpose of Stop Day this year and get the college back to its roots.

Students will spend the hours between 2 p.m. and 5 p.m. on Stop Day working with various community businesses and organizations. Projects range from activities like painting rocks with youth at Crete Elementary, to basement cleanup at Davidson Insurance to a car wash in support of a local cancer patient.

All Student Congress-allocated organizations on campus are required to have 75 percent of members participate in a service project.

Additional changes to the event include a concert on the night of Stop Day Eve. A small group of students which included seniors Brooke Segerstrom, Jason Luong, Ethan Thompkins, Mitch Magrini, Ross Schulenberg and Austin Benson and junior Coryelle Thomas was established to select an artist for the new addition to Stop Day. Hot Chelle Ray, a band known for songs like “Tonight Tonight” and “I Like It Like That,” was selected to perform in the George and Sally Haddix Recreation and Athletic Center from 8 p.m. to 10 p.m. on Stop Day Eve.

The softball tournament usually held on Stop Day Eve was then moved to the morning of Stop Day. Many of the traditional Stop Day events also ran on Stop Day morning including sand volleyball, canoe races and a basketball tournament.
