Doane led throughout most of the game, only to see Iowa Wesleyan continue to battle back on Wednesday afternoon in men's basketball action. In the end, Trent Schlautman hit two free throws to lift the Doane Tigers to a 73-71 victory in Mt. Pleasant, Iowa. Doane won both games in the home-and-home series this year in the battle of the Tigers.
Doane led by as many as 10 points in the first half and by nine in the second half but Iowa Wesleyan was able to tie the game with six seconds remaining. IWC was able to take a lead early in the second half after opening the half with a 14-3 run.
Iowa Wesleyan hit a basket as time expired and it was originally counted to tie the game. However, after a discussion between the officials, the basket was disallowed.
Doane was led by Brett McFarland's 14 points as four Tigers ended the game in double figures. Jake Johnson and Tyler Weatherholt added 13 points apiece while Schlautman finished with 11 points. McFarland added a team-high six steals while Jack Lind finished with a team-high eight rebounds.
Iowa Wesleyan was led by Da'kari Shelby's 26 points while Brett Humpal added 19 points and nine rebounds. Doane held the rebound edge, 40-29.
Doane will travel to the University of Nebraska-Kearney to take on the Lopers on Saturday, January 3, at 7:00 PM.
