No. 20 Hastings Tops Doane
Hastings College and Doane entered Wednesday night's match-up with different goals in mind. For the Broncos, they were looking to claim the GPAC crown with a victory where as Doane was looking to move into second place in the conference standing with a win over the heavily favored Broncos. Hastings entered the match-up with a No. 20 ranking in the NAIA poll.
Hastings scored first as Yannic Thiel scored on a throw in by Nate Polak. Doane came back as Jordan Schafer made a hustle play to go after a loose ball deep in Hastings territory and Bronco keeper Cody Poteat was called for a foul in the goal box giving Doane a penalty kick. Devon Strecker converted for the Tigers to tie the game at 1-1 and that would be the score heading into halftime.
Hastings kept the pressure on the Tigers and in the 70th minute following a Tiger foul, the Broncos sent a ball in towards the Doane goal and it was headed off the cross bar by a Tiger player. However, because of the Doane deflection it took Tiger goalkeeper Chris Kavinsky out of position because he had to defend against the errant ball toward the goal and when it bounced off the cross bar, Greg Dodds chipped it in for the Broncos.
Just over a minute later, Hastings picked up an insurance goal from Joel Pedroza to give the Broncos a 3-1 victory.
Kavinsky finished with nine saves while Poteat had five for Hastings. The Broncos out-shot the Tigers, 22-11.
