Mustangs Run Past Doane
No. 11 Morningside College used the strength of their highly touted defense to cruise to a 73-0 victory over Doane College in the football opener for both teams. The Tigers struggled to find consistency on offense, never getting into Morningside territory. Doane was also plagued on special teams, especially in regards to punting. The Mustangs blocked two punt attempts while Doane also had a pair of bad snaps resulting in lost yardage.
Unfortunately for Doane, even when something good happened for the Tigers the Mustangs capitalized. Early in the second quarter, the Tiger defense held Morningside to a 20-yard field goal attempt which would be blocked by Kedrick Kelley. However, M-side kicker CJ Gradoville picked up his blocked attempt and took it into the end zone for a touchdown.
At the end of the day, Morningside's average starting field position was the Doane 48 yard line.
The Tiger defense held the Mustangs to 129 rushing yards on 44 attempts. Doane was limited to 15 net rushing yards. M-side racked up 284 passing yards on 18 completions in 27 attempts. Doane was 6-for-24 passing for 34 yards.
Maurice Smith rolled up 37 yards on 10 carries. He had a long of 10 yards. Michael Vargas added 27 yards on seven carries with a long of 13 yards.
JR Artozqui threw for 29 yards on five completions. Bryan Dutcher added a five-yard completion. Blake Erickson led the receivers with three grabs for 19 yards.
Smith and Kelley led the special teams return yardage with 79 yards and 71 yards, respectively.
Defensively, Doane was led in tackles by Kelley's six solo and one assists. He added two pass break-ups. Pat Spangler added seven tackles as well, four solo and three assists. Dustin Lind and Toby Hite each had three tackles for loss.
