Keeney, Mitchell Receive GPAC Honors

(Sioux City, Iowa) - The Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) and Hauff Mid-America Sports are proud to announce the following men's outdoor track & field athletes-of-the-week for April 18 - April 24, 2011. Hauff Mid-America Sports is the presenting sponsor of the 2010-2011 GPAC players-of-the-week and players and coaches-of-the-year awards program.

Field Events - Rob Keeney, Doane

Doane's Rob Keeney is the field athlete-of-the-week. Keeney, a sophomore from Callaway, Nebraska, broke the school record in the decathlon, becoming the first athlete in conference history to go over 7,000 points in the event. He broke the previous mark of John Brockhaus set in 1992 (6,867 pts). Keeney posted a provisional NAIA mark in the high jump with a leap of 6-07.00. Winning 7 of the 10 events, his score of 7,031 points leads the NAIA by nearly 200 points.

Track Events - Virgil Mitchell, Doane
Doane's Virgil Mitchell is the track athlete-of-the-week. Mitchell, a junior from Omaha, Nebraska, set the stadium and meet record on Saturday at the Doane Relays posting a time of 14.15 in the 110m hurdles. He ranks third in the NAIA in the 110m hurdles and sits 5th in the 400m hurdles in the NAIA standings with a time of 53.16. Mitchell and the Doane Track Team will continue competition at the Drake University Relays on April 28-30 held in Des Moines, Iowa.
