Homecoming 2012
This year's Doane College Homecoming celebration will be bigger and better, boasting eight days of celebration from Sept. 30-Oct. 7. As Doane commemorates its 140-year anniversary and the beginning of many exciting projects, the college and Crete, Lincoln and Grand Island communities will celebrate with the theme, "The Start of Something Big."
This year's festivities will include high-energy events in all Doane campus communities. The college will celebrate 30 years of Lincoln campus service during a Big Birthday Celebration at Antelope Park on Sept. 30 from 2-6 p.m. Workshops offering a big boost for careers will be featured at both Lincoln and Grand Island campuses this year.
The Homecoming events will also feature special classes, a parade, tailgate, football game, concert, theatre production, and a behind-the-scenes tour with the Crete Teammates program.
This year's events list also includes an opportunity to relive Interterm classes, a favorite memory for alumni. The courses are big on laughs and low on stress and range from country line dancing to professionally decorating cupcakes. (Community members and alumni can sign up for just $5 and RSVP at doane.edu/homecoming2012.)
You won't want to miss the keynote speaker for the Doane College Society Gala, Gallup Corporation's CEO Jim Clifton. The gala will begin at 5:30 p.m. on Oct. 5 at the Cornhusker Hotel in Lincoln. The invitation-only event is open to Doane College Society members.
The events in Crete on Saturday, Oct. 6 kick off with the Crete community parade at 10 a.m. on Main Street. Campus and community groups will take to the streets with Tiger-sized floats, and the community is invited to cheer them on.
After the parade, the public is encouraged to join other fans at the Tiger Tailgate in Cassel Open Air Theatre on Doane's Crete campus. The Tiger Cub Club, a low-cost child service program, offers a great opportunity for K-5th graders to get involved with crafts, games, face painting and more while parents enjoy the afternoon interruption-free. RSVP to reserve a spot for your child.
The Homecoming football game begins at 1 p.m. at Simon Field as the Tigers take on the Morningside College Mustangs. Local youth involved in the Crete Teammates program will be given VIP seating at the game and a special tour of the campus.
The theatre department will present three showings of "Boeing, Boeing" in Whitcomb Lee Conservatory October 4-6, beginning at 7:30 p.m.. The production is a fun comedy about an architect who gets engaged to three flight attendants. For ticket reservations, email theatre.reservations@doane.edu.
The events will wrap up at 3 p.m. on Oct. 7 in Heckman Auditorium with the annual Homecoming concert.
