Heier named GPAC Athletic Director-of-the-Year
Greg Heier, the Athletic Director at Doane College in Crete, Nebraska, has been selected by his colleagues as the Hauff Mid-America Sports/GPAC Athletic Director-of-the-Year for 2012-13. Heier won the same honor one year ago in 2011-12.
Heier has been the Athletic Director at Doane since 2006 and this past year the Tigers athletic program placed second in the GPAC All-Sports Trophy standings for the second year in a row.
In 2012-13 Doane totaled four conference regular season championships and four runner-ups finishes, while a school record 50 student-athletes earned NAIA-Daktronics Scholar-Athlete recognition. Doane won GPAC titles in Women's and Men's Indoor and Outdoor Track and Field. The Tigers also won GPAC postseason championships in volleyball, women's soccer and men's tennis over the course of the year.
In May of 2013, under Heier's guidance, Doane hosted the 2013 NAIA Women's Golf National Championship at Wilderness Ridge in Lincoln, Nebraska. Doane will host the 2014 event as well in conjunction with the Lincoln Convention and Visitors Bureau.
"I want to congratulate Greg on claiming this award for the second year in a row," said GPAC Commissioner Corey Westra. "Greg is a steady voice of reason among the league's athletic directors and has a drive for excellence that shows among all of the Doane athletic teams. The Tigers enjoyed an outstanding 2012-13 season with a total of seven league titles between regular and postseason play." Westra added, "to be recognized by your peers in back-to-back years speaks to the level of respect that Heier has in the conference."
Heier practiced law from 1988-1998 after earning his J.D. degree from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln in 1988. Prior to becoming Athletic Director in 2006 he worked in Human Resources and Risk Management at Doane since 1998.
Heier will receive a plaque from Hauff Mid-America Sports for his achievement.
