Doane and Midland Lutheran battled to a scoreless tie for 58 minutes and 57 seconds. Neither team would give an edge to their opponent. However, a Hail Mary type of pass by Bryan Dutcher connected with Landon Freitag between two defenders for a 41-yard game-winning touchdown reception for the Tigers with two seconds remaining in the game.
The win for Doane was their first over the Warriors since 2001 when they were victorious 23-10. In the previous five games, Midland Lutheran had averaged 30.4 points and 422 yards in total offense.
Both teams had limited scoring opportunities as Doane missed two field goals of 33 and 47 yards while Midland Lutheran missed a 51-yard field goal attempt with 1:05 remaining.
Doane had a respectable day offensively, collecting 334 yards. The Tigers rushed for 170 yards and passed for 164. Doane's defense was stout as they limited Midland Lutheran to 105 total yards in the game.
Jaremy Puthoff rushed for 48 yards while Garrett Schroeder added 46 yards for Doane. Dutcher threw for 105 yards on five completions. Luke Burson led the receiving core as he had two receptions. Nine different Tigers had a reception on the day.
Defensively, Seth Styskal collected 11 total tackles. Four of his tackles were for a loss, including 2.5 sacks. Josh Warren added eight tackles and an interception that was returned for a touchdown but called back for defensive holding after the pick. Anthony Brock had 2.5 sacks for a loss of 25 total yards.
Doane will travel to Northwestern College on Saturday, November 10 to take on the Red Raiders. Kick-off is set for 1:00 PM.
