Campus Closing Information: TUESDAY, JANUARY 17 - Crete campus is open. Grand Island, Lincoln and Omaha campuses will open at noon. As of now, evening classes for Tuesday are on as scheduled.
A walk-off double by Gina Falciani lifted Doane to a 4-3 win in game two against Concordia as the Tigers split the doubleheader on Wednesday afternoon in Crete. Concordia took the first game, 8-6, winning in their last at-bat.
Game One (L 6-8)
Doane plated five runs in the first as they sent nine batters to the plate but were unable to hold off Concordia.
In the first inning, Falciani drew a one-out walk and scored on a single by Brooke Sampson. Following a steal by Sampson, Shelby Mendlik hit a two-run single to plate Christy Kobza and Sampson. Mendlik came around to score on a single by Kylie Garrett. Amber Stater plated the final run in Garrett with a two-out double.
Concordia tied the game in the third with five runs on five hits and a Doane error.
Both teams plated a run in the fifth. Doane's run came from a sacrifice fly by Alyssa Maraia. On the play, Kara Riesen scored after she entered the game to run for Kobza.
In the top of the seventh, Mikaela Klein hit a 1-2 pitch into a 30-mph wind for a two-run home run with two outs to give the Bulldogs the lead.
In the bottom of the inning, Mendlik had a two-out double but the Tigers were unable to do anything else in the inning.
Megan Wingate threw 2.1 innings, allowing five runs on five hits as she took a no-decision. Jenna Alswager took the loss, allowing three runs on five hits in 4.2 innings of relief work.
The Tigers had 11 hits in the game, led by Mendlik's three hits and two RBIs. Kobza added a two-hit game for the Tigers.
Game Two (W 4-3, 9 inn.)
Concordia jumped out early, taking a 3-0 lead after two innings but the Tigers returned the favor of game one and rallied for the win.
In the fourth, the Tigers plated their first run on a solo home run by Mendlik. Doane tied the game in the fifth with two runs. Katie Mosley opened the inning and reached on an error. With Jenny Jackson running for Mosley, Falciani singled to plate a run. Falciani moved up to second on a throwing error. Kobza came to the plate and singled in Falciani for the tying run as the Bulldog catcher was unable to hold on to the throw in.
Concordia threatened in the sixth as their first two runners reached on a hit and an error. Doane starter Kylie Garrett followed with back-to-back strikeouts and induced a pop-up to end the inning.
That would be the last inning that the Bulldogs put a runner on base as Garrett threw a perfect final three innings.
Doane stranded the winning run at third base in the seventh and at first base in the eighth.
Following a ground out to open up the Tiger ninth, Andrea Gonzales picked up an infield single. Falciani then delivered a double to right center to plate Gonzales from first base for the winning run.
Garrett threw a complete game for the Tigers. She allowed three runs on four hits over nine innings. The Bulldogs were held to one hit in the final seven innings, collecting three hits in the first two innings. Garrett struck out four and did not walk a batter.
Falciani was 3-for-4 at the plate with two RBIs. Gonzales added a two-hit game as well.
