DWU Wins Defensive Battle
The Tiger football dropped a tough decision to Dakota Wesleyan on Saturday afternoon, falling 14-7. Dakota Wesleyan controlled time of possession, especially in the fourth quarter where they held the ball eight minutes longer than Doane.
Doane picked up their lone touchdown with 5:09 remaining in the game when Anthony Dunn hooked up with Antony Ritton for a 35-yard pass. Dakota Wesleyan was able to pick up four first downs in the final minutes to run out the clock.
The Tigers finished with 265 total yards of offense but were plagued by five turnovers. Dakota Wesleyan finished with 347 yards as the Doane defense forced four turnovers.
Defensively, Seth Styskal finished with 11 tackles and one sack. Ryan Gruntorad posted eight tackles and one interception.
Josh Warren snagged an interception and returned it 42 yards. He also collected four tackles.
Hondo Fanning forced a fumble and picked up eight tackles. Selau Sunia finished with six tackles and a fumble recovery while Zach Brenner notched five tackles and a fumble recovery.
On the offensive side of the ball, Alex Hall paced the Tiger ground game as he collected 51 yards on 15 carries. Michael Vargas added 18 yards on four carries.
Through the air, Dunn completed nine passes for 123 yards but threw four interceptions. D'Artagnan Dai'Re completed one pass for 29 yards.
Landon Freitag caught a team-high three passes for 17 yards. Ritton pulled in two receptions for 66 yards.
The Tigers will play host to Northwestern College on October 18 at 1:00 PM.
