Doane's 'Before I Die' wall makes Chang's book
A photo of Doane’s “Before I Die Wall” has made the final draft of artist Candy Chang’s book of the same name, which was released on Nov. 5.
The book, "Before I Die," contains pictures of similar walls created in over 60 countries. It celebrates those public walls and the stories they hold.
Chang visited Doane last year to mentor art students and help them create Doane’s very own wall. This project allowed students, faculty, staff and Crete community members to write in what they aspired to do before they died. Chang started this project in 2011 after she lost someone she loved very much. She painted the side of an abandoned house with chalkboard paint and stenciled in “Before I die I want to_____.”
Mere hours after Chang created the wall it was covered with scrawled chalk dreams by neighbors and others in her community.
On Chang’s website, her book is described as “filled with hope, fear, humor and heartbreak, Before I Die presents an intimate portrait of the dreams within our communities and a chance to ponder life’s ultimate question with the people around us.”
Publisher’s Weekly also calls it, “a powerful and valuable reminder that life is for the living, and it’s never too late, or too early, to join the party.”
"Before I Die" is available online and in stores. Grab a copy today to see Doane’s very own wall pictured in the work.
