Doane took one of the top teams in the GPAC the distance on Wednesday afternoon in Crete and when it was all said and done, the Tigers upset Hastings College, 1-0, in women's soccer action. Hastings was receiving votes in the national poll.
The victory for Doane was only their third all-time (3-17) versus the Broncos and the Tigers didn't it on a cold, windy and rain day in Crete.
Doane overcame the Broncos' second half charge in which they out-shot the Tigers 19-4 and 8-2 on shots on goal. The two squads would not budge until the final four minutes of the game when Sarah Medina took a pass up the right side and fired in a shot from about 20 yards away. It was saved by Hastings goalie Megan Kreifels but rolled away and Samantha Exstrom came flying in to pick up the lose ball and chip it over Kreifels for the go-ahead goal with 3:07 remaining in the contest.
The final minutes, Doane fought off a continuous push by the Broncos and were able to clear the ball out in timely fashion at each opportunity to preserve the victory.
Doane goalkeeper Jordan Ludwig finished with 11 saves in the contest while Kreifels picked up nine for Hastings.
