Doane Unable to Finish Rally in GPAC First Round

The 2010 GPAC Men's Soccer Tournament was not a friendly one for Doane this season as Dakota Wesleyan upset the Tigers in the First Round, 3-2. The loss ends the Doane season at 10-7-1 after finishing second in the conference standings.

Dakota Wesleyan opened up the game with a goal in the first 44 seconds of play as Hugo Gonzalez got free down the left side of the field and found Dane Hagen on a centering pass for the first goal.

Doane answered back nine minutes later as Tom Heavey took a direct kick from Sean Dougherty and put it in the back of the net. Gonzales gave DWU a 2-1 advantage as he broke through the Doane defense for an unassisted goal. Doane had several opportunities to tie the game up before halftime; having shot attempts hit the post on several occasions.

In the second half, Dakota Wesleyan looked primed to take a two goal lead when a penalty kick was awarded following a Doane foul. However, Matt Bickley was able to stop a low shot attempt to his left by Eric Christianson to keep the Tigers within one goal.

In the 62nd minute of play, Sean Dougherty sent another direct kick in towards goal and Juan Padilla headed the ball in to tie up the game at 2-all. DWU responded six minutes later as Eric Moller scored on a corner kick taken by Mason Herbert.

Doane missed a couple of opportunities late, including a shot that hit the post. The final four minutes were played with Doane up a man following a pair of yellow cards on Gonzalez.

Dakota Wesleyan moves on to play Sioux Falls in the semifinals.
