Doane Turnovers End Chances for Upset
The Doane women's basketball team was able to get off to a strong start versus No. 2 Hastings College on Wednesday evening but turnovers in key stretches plagued the Tigers as they fell 77-59.
The game was tight early on but an 8-0 spurt by the Tigers gave them a nine point lead with 6:22 remaining in the first half. However, the Broncos closed the half on a 14-0 run as the Tigers committed four straight turnovers after taking the nine point advantage. Doane had five turnovers in their final 10 possessions of the half. Hastings led 34-29 at halftime.
In the second half, Doane was able to tie the game at 37-all on a Hannah Helman basket. After an exchange of possessions, Hastings pushed up court and drew a foul on Helman as she was injured on the play. With Helman out, the Broncos went on a 10-0 run as the Tigers were once again hit by the turnover bug, committing three on six possessions.
Doane finished with 23 turnovers in the game which led to 24 points for the Broncos. Hastings also held an edge on the boards, 36-27, and picked up 13 offensive boards. They out-scored Doane in second chance points, 12-5.
For Doane, they were led by Lindsay Shaw's 16 points as she knocked down four three-point baskets. Kristine Ortmeier added 11 points and Helman posted 10. Vanessa Munter posted eight rebounds to go with nine points and Morgan Dubas grabbed five boards to go with her seven points.
Hastings was paced by Alicia Statler's 21 points and eight rebounds. Kim Faimon posted 17 points, four steals and five boards for the Broncos.
