Doane Tops NWU in Overtime
Doane needed overtime but they were able to come away from Lincoln with a 68-65 victory over Nebraska Wesleyan University in the GPAC opener on Tuesday evening. Doane improved to 3-2 overall while NWU was handed their first loss and fell to 2-1.
The Tigers were able to build a seven point lead in the first half but a 10-0 run by the Prairie Wolves put NWU ahead by three points, 23-20. The two teams battled back and forth the rest of the way in the first half and went to halftime tied at 36. Dane Cruz posted 19 first half points for the Tigers.
In the second half, NWU was able to build a five point lead with eight minutes to play but five points from Cruz tied the game, 55-55. Doane trailed by four points with 4:09 remaining but the Tiger defense held NWU scoreless the rest of the way and Brett McFarland and Dane Cruz hit a pair of free throws to tie the game. Dane Cruz had a three point attempt at the end of regulation that just rimmed out.
Overtime saw NWU take an early two point lead just seconds into the extra period. The Doane defense was solid the remaining 4:37 as the Prairie Wolves were held to two points. Doane received two free throws from Dane Cruz and one from Kolby Hamilton in the final 1:19 to clinch the victory
Cruz led all scorers with 30 points. Brett McFarland added 14 points, seven rebounds and five assists for the Tigers.
NWU was led in scoring by Marcus Minzel and Dylan Aylward. They both scored 12 points.
Doane will travel to Hastings on Friday for the Thanksgiving Classic. The Tigers will take on Friends University at 2:00 PM. The game can be heard on the Tiger Sports Network.
