Doane to Host NAIA Opening Round Match
The National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) announced the Opening Round pairings for the 2009 Volleyball National Tournament on Sunday evening and Doane College was selected as one of 12 host sites. The Tigers will host Black Hills State (S.D.) on November 21 and the winner of the match will advance to the final site in Sioux City for pool play on December 2-4.
Doane (28-7) and Black Hills State (24-11) met earlier this season in Hastings at the Bronco Classic. Doane defeated the Yellow Jackets in straight sets, 25-22, 25-17 and 25-15. Jessy Livers led Doane with 12 kills and 14 digs. Kristen Engle led BHSU with 10 kills and six total blocks.
This is Black Hills State's second appearance in the national tournament, making their first appearance last year. They defeated William Penn (Iowa) in five games in the Opening Round and advanced to the final site. In pool play, they fell to Fresno Pacific (Calif.) and Point Loma Nazarene (Calif.) while defeating Morningside (Iowa).
Doane is making their eighth appearance in the national tournament, the first time they have appeared in back-to-back years. Last year, the Tigers defeated Bethel (Kan.) in four games to advance to Sioux City. In pool play, Doane dropped matches to Bellevue (Neb.) and Vanguard (Calif.) while defeating Lindenwood (Mo.).
Game time for the match has not been set but is expected to be announced as early as Monday, November 16.
