Doane Theatre creates its own interpretation of what many consider to be the first modern play as it presents Woyzeck Nov. 30 - Dec. 2.
Performances begin at 7:30 p.m. in Whitcomb Lee Conservatory. Tickets are $5 or free with a Doane ID.
Robin McKercher, assistant professor of theatre, directors this play about Franz Woyzeck, an impoverished soldier in a small town. According to McKercher, the play began as a drawerful of fragments left by 22-year-old playwright, Georg Büchner, who died of typhus in 1836. The handful of scenes sketch the tale of a man, conditionally programmed by medical science, who commits a terrible crime. It is loosely based on the true story of Johann Christian Woyzeck, a wigmaker who in a fit of jealousy murdered a widow with whom he had lived.
The work was incomplete at the time of Büchner's death, but was "finished" by a variety of authors, editors and translators to become one of the most performed and influential plays in the German theatre repertory. It was first performed in 1913 in Munich.
Today, Woyzeck is recognized as a modernist classic that challenges each director to interpret the pieces. McKercher calls his version "an updated contemporary translation... an emotional and moving jigsaw puzzle, at once goofy and tragic, sexy and heartbreaking."
