Doane Starts GPAC Tourney with W
The Tiger baseball team opened the 2011 GPAC Tournament with an impressive victory over Mount Marty College, 11-1.
The two teams were scoreless through the first two innings before the Lancers got on the board in the top of the third. A walk and a bunt single to open the frame put runners at second and third following a sacrifice bunt. Jason Schmidt grounded out to plate a run for Mt. Marty to give them the lead.
Doane responded in the bottom of the inning. Doane loaded the bases with one out and push the tying and go-ahead runs through on a double by Mike Albert. Anthony Dunn followed with a RBI-ground out. Jason West brought Albert in with a two-out single and a 4-1 lead. Back-to-back errors brought in two more runs as Doane lead 6-1 after the frame.
In the fourth, Doane added three runs to their lead. Thomas Albert opened with a double, stole third and scored on a wild pitch. Dunn doubled to plate AJ Spanel and Mike Korsakas singled to plate Mike Albert.
Doane closed out the game in the fifth by taking a 10-run lead. With two outs, AJ Spanel singled and the ball skipped past the center fielder and rolled to the wall. Ethan Schroeder scored on the play and Spanel made his way around the base paths for an unearned run.
Nathan Roth threw a complete game for the Tigers on 59 pitches. He allowed four hits and struck out four.
Doane took advantage of five errors and picked up 10 hits. Three Tigers finished with multi-hit games: Mike Albert, Ethan Schroeder and Thomas Albert. Mike Albert and Dunn posted two-RBI games. AJ Spanel had three runs scored for the Tigers.
