Doane Service Projects Gathering Coats, Clothes For Those in Need

Two Doane College service projects are underway to help place coats and clothing in the hands of those in need this winter.

coat driveDoane is collecting coats, new or gently used, for the Heart Ministry Center in Omaha. Last weekend, thousands of coats were distributed by charitable organizations across the city but there were not enough coats for all who needed them. At the Heart Ministry Center in North Omaha, an estimated 3,000 people stood in line to receive a warm coat for the coming winter season. The Center only had 1,200 coats available but handed out vouchers for 1,000 more coats they hope to give away on December 1. The Center needs help - they need at least 1,000 additional coats!

Please go through your closets this Thanksgiving season and see if there are extra coats to share with persons in need, to help make their holidays more special. You can leave coats at the front desk in the Crete campus Perry Student Center, at the Grand Island campus in College Park or at Doane's Lincoln campus at 303 North 52nd St. Please bring the coats by noon on Tuesday, Nov. 29.

A clothing drive Nov. 28-30, sponsored by Sertoma, will help distribute clothing items. Any type of clothing in good condition (without holes, stains, etc.) will be accepted, including, shirts, pants, coats, sweaters, stocking hats and matching gloves.

Please place clothing donations in labeled bins, which will be located in the lobby or laundry room of the Crete campus residence halls.

UPDATE 12/2/2011:

Photo of loading coats into a Doane van.Students, faculty, and staff at Doane's three campuses responded to a great need in Omaha for winter coats. On Wednesday, the college delivered over 200 coats to the Heart Ministry Center in North Omaha. The following day these coats and hundreds of others were distributed to nearly a thousand persons who two weeks ago, after standing in line for a long time, were unable to receive coats. At that time, an estimated 3,000 people stood in line at the Heart Ministry Center to get a warm coat for the coming winter season. At that time, the Center only had 1,200 coats but handed out 1000 vouchers for coats that they were able to give away on December 1st.

We are still collecting coats through the first two weeks of December. Coats may be dropped off at the front counter in the Perry Center or at the receptionist desks at Doane's Lincoln and Grand Island campuses.
