The Doane women's basketball team opened the 2010-11 season with a strong defensive performance in an 83-43 victory over Bethany College. The 40-point victory was the Tiger's largest margin of victory to open the season since the 2001-02 season when Doane record a 103-63 win over Newman University.
Doane opened the game by holding Bethany scoreless over the first 11 minutes of play. The Tigers took a 36-13 lead into halftime behind 41.9-percent shooting from the floor. Doane was balanced in scoring with six players scoring at least four points, led by Cheryl Braithwait's eight first half points.
Bethany opened up the second half with back-to-back three-point baskets but the Tigers answered with a 21-8 run to build a 59-27 lead. Brittany Luettel hit a pair of three-point baskets in the stretch to help spark the team. The Tigers' biggest lead came when Ashley Daily hit a three-point basket to put Doane up 80-34.
For the game, Braithwait led the team with 18 points on 7-of-12 shooting. She added three assists and three steals. Luettel added 13 points and three assists as she hit 4-of-5 three-point attempts. Kristine Ortmeier finished with 12 points and three steals.
Brittany Lurz led the team with four assists and four steals. Daily added four assists as well. Savannah Lohmeier came away with a near double-double, eight points and 11 rebounds while adding three assists and three steals. Kalen Carlson finished with nine points and three steals in her first game as a Tiger. Freshman Cali Bellar added three steals to the team total of 23 for the game. Doane also finished with 24 assists while committing only 16 turnovers and held a rebounding advantage of 44-30, including a 22-8 edge on the offensive boards.
Doane will travel to College of St. Mary on Saturday, November 6, for a 6:00 tip-off.
