Doane Music Professor Earns Multiple Awards
Director of Instrumental Music and Chair of the Music Department, Dr. Jay Gilbert was recently honored with several awards by the Nebraska State Bandmasters Association.
He was awarded two Distinguished Service Awards and the Citation of Excellence for promoting better bands in Nebraska, and for his contribution to band and band music.
The two Distinguished Service Awards were given to Dr. Gilbert for his contribution to music outside of Doane College, including judging a contest and being the contact for a meeting hosted at Doane over the summer.
Dr. Gilbert was awarded the Citation of Excellence by his Nebraska colleagues for the outstanding performance of the Symphonic Wind Ensemble at the Nebraska Music Education Association (NMEA) in the fall. The Doane Symphonic Wind Ensemble has been invited to perform three times at the NMEA Conference and twice as the Nebraska State Bandmasters Convention.
“As a band director, it is always nice to be recognized,” said Dr. Gilbert, “but the real reward is working with the wonderful students at Doane College.”
This is Dr. Gilbert’s 21st year at Doane and he is the band director who has taught here the longest - surprising since when he first started he planned to stay only a few years.
“I thought I’d only be here for two years, but I became good friends with (President Emeritus Fred) Brown,” he said. “That’s the difference between teaching at a major university and a small liberal arts college. You are able to develop more relationships. I’ve really felt that Doane has been a good experience for me.”
In fact, Dr. Gilbert said he has the best job at Doane. Why? Because he said he had the unique opportunity to work with students their entire college career.
“Band is such an interesting thing,” Dr. Gilbert said. “(Students) may have a professor for a class or two, but (they) are stuck with me for 8 semesters. Sometimes we have our moments, like any dysfunctional family, but it’s great.”
These awards join Dr. Gilbert's other recognition: two additional Citations of Excellence from the National Band Association, the Zenon Hansen Leadership Award, Outstanding Teacher of the Year and induction into the University of Nebraska-Omaha Band Hall of Fame.
