Symphonic Wind Ensemble
The Doane College Symphonic Wind Ensemble is the premiere wind organization of the college. One of four winds organizations on the Doane campus, the ensemble presents several concerts throughout the school year and makes an annual tour. In recognition of its excellence, the Symphonic Wind Ensemble has performed for the state meetings of the Nebraska Music Educators Association.
The Symphonic Wind Ensemble is guided by a philosophy which seeks to expose its members and audiences to the highest quality literature written for the wind band medium. Repertoire for this ensemble includes works from all styles, genres and historical periods. Through rehearsal and performance of this repertoire, students experience a variety of compositional and rehearsal techniques appropriate not only for the college level, but for use in the public schools. The significant musical challenge of these works also allows the students to continue to develop their individual musicianship.
The ensemble is conducted by Dr. Jay W. Gilbert, director of Instrumental Music and chair of the Music Department at Doane. He also conducts Concert Band, and the Doane Tiger Pep Band, and oversees all aspects of the instrumental music education program. He also is the music director of the Blue River Community Band. A native of Madison, Wisconsin, he holds a bachelor's degree in music education from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and Masters and Doctoral degrees in conducting from Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois.
Directed by Greg Olsen, Doane Jazz Ensemble is a select ensemble of 18 players that performs a variety of jazz styles and genres. The Jazz Ensemble has performed on several tours and gives performances on and off campus. The ensemble provides opportunities for small group and solo improvisatory playing.
