Doane Knocks Off No. 7 Northwestern
Doane picked up their first win over Northwestern College in three years, snapping a five-game losing streak to the Red Raiders with an 80-75 victory on Saturday evening in Crete. Northwestern had ended the Tigers' season each of the past two years in the GPAC Tournament. The Tigers also handed Northwestern, ranked No. 7 in NAIA Division II, their first conference loss since winning the GPAC title last year and only their second loss in 23 GPAC games.
The Tigers controlled much of the first half, trailing for only two of the 20 minutes. The Tigers built a lead of 10 points late in the half only to see the Red Raiders finish with a 7-2 run to cut the lead to 38-33 entering halftime.
The first half for Doane was keyed by offensive rebounds. The Tigers held a 6-1 advantage in second chance points during the first stanza.
In the second half, Northwestern used a 9-0 run after the Tigers scored the first basket of the half to take a 42-40 lead. Doane responded on their following possession to tie the game up on an Amy Fox lay-up.
Doane regained and held a small advantage for the next five minutes of play before the Red Raiders took a one-point lead on a Val Kleinjan three-point basket. Northwestern built their largest lead of three points following two free throws by Amy Kallemeyn.
The Tigers responded with a three-point basket from Se'erra Fantroy to tie the game and took the lead on a pair of free throw from Fox. Randa Hulstein tied the game at 61-61 with 6:06 remaining with a lay-up.
Over the next three minutes, Doane went on a 9-0 run to build a lead that Northwestern could not overcome. Doane's final 12 points of the game came from the free throw line.
The Tiger effort was led by Lindsay Anderson's 23 points. She added four assists and three steals to go with five rebounds. Amy Fox added 18 points and two assists for Doane. Se'erra Fantroy and Hannah Helman came off the bench to contribute 12 and 11 points, respectively. Brittany Lurz, the shortest player on the court, led all players with eight rebounds, four offensive.
The Red Raiders were led by Randa Hulstein's 19 points and seven rebounds off the bench. Becca Hurley added 17 points and five rebounds for Northwestern. Val Kleinjan chipped in 14 points while Kami Kuhlmann added 10 points and three assists.
Doane will travel to Blair on Tuesday, January 13, to take on Dana College. Tip-off is set for 7:30 PM.
