Doane Knocks off No. 20 Berea
Doane used a career-high 32 points from Ashley Howard to rally and hold off No. 20 Berea College 94-90 at the Island Time Classic in the Virgin Islands.
Howard scored 22 points in the second half including 13 points in the opening three minutes as Doane went on a 17-0 run to rally from a 47-43 halftime deficit.
Lindsay Anderson paced Doane in the first half, scoring 13 of her 17 points. Alissa Holland added 13 points and Ashley Sullwold chipped in 10. Sullwold had a game-high 10 rebounds for the double-double.
With the Tigers up 12 points and 5:10 remaining in the game, Berea put together a 15-2 run to regain the lead 88-87 with 1:35 left.
Doane took the lead back when Justine Munsterman connected for a pair of free throws to put the Tigers up 89-88.
Berea answered with a pair of free throws on their end by Rebecca May. May led the Lady Mountaineers with 20 points.
With 58 seconds remaining, Lindsay Anderson found Alissa Holland for a layup to put Doane ahead 91-90.
After a Berea turnover, Ashley Howard was fouled and connected on one of two free throw attempts.
Berea then missed a shot on their next possession and was forced to foul with 4.5 seconds remaining. Lindsay Anderson hit both free throw attempts to seal the 94-90 Tiger victory.
For the game, Doane (10-5) shot 47.8 percent including 40 percent (4-of-10) from behind the three-point arc. The Tigers were 24-of-30 (80 percent) from the free throw line.
Berea (11-4) shot 32.3 percent from the floor and 29.2 percent (14-of-48) from behind the three-point arc.
Doane will be in action again on January 3 when they travel to Lincoln to take on the Prairie Wolves of Nebraska Wesleyan. Tip-off is set for 6:00 pm.
