Doane Grabs Two Wins in Iowa
The Tiger volleyball team opened the 2007 campaign with a pair of impressive victories at the Red Raider Classic in Orange City, Iowa. Doane defeated College of the Southwest in the season opener, 3-0, and College of St. Mary in the nightcap, 3-1. They will play two more games at the Bultman Center on Saturday.
Tigers vs. College of the Southwest
Doane opened the season with a three-game victory over the Mustangs of the College of the Southwest (NM); 30-18, 30-26, 30-24.
Doane received a balanced attack from the offense. Kari Hochstein paced the team with 15 kills while Nicole Skolnick added 10 kills. Ashley Sluka posted 18 assists while Heather Davison notched 17. Kaylee Lubken and Jessy Livers were in double-digits in digs with 24 and 12, respectively.
The Tigers allowed the Mustangs to stay in the match as they posted 12 service errors. However, Doane stayed aggressive and collected seven ace serves.
Tigers vs. College of St. Mary
Doane rallied after a difficult game one to pull away from the Flames of the College of St. Mary (NE) 3-1. The scores were 27-30, 30-16, 30-19, 30-18. CSM is ranked No. 14 in the NAIA, while Doane is ranked No. 19.
Again, the Tigers were balanced as four players were in double-figures in kills. Livers led the team with 18 kills. The middle blocker combination of Hochstein and Chelsee Marvin added 29 kills. Skolnick posted 10 kills. Sluka dished out 27 assists while Davison picked up 24 assists. Lubken led the way in digs as she collected 21. Marvin led a strong wall at the net, picking up eight block assists.
Doane struggled with 10 service errors but were able to notch nine ace serves. For the match, the Tigers posted a .316 attack percentage as they had 67 kills compared to 13 attack errors.
The Tigers will face Mayville State College at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday morning in Orange City. At 1:00 p.m., Doane will take on No. 17 Georgetown College. The games can be heard live on the Tiger Sports Network.
