Doane College Sponsors triMATHlon High-School Math Contest
Lincoln Southwest and Thayer Central high schools were the overall team champions in the 10th annual triMATHlon Math Contest, held Oct. 1 at Doane College's Crete campus.
About 140 high-school students took part in the math contest, which includes three stages. The Extreme Team Challenge event involved the use of directional compasses to locate large trapezoids laid out in the campus green, as well as questions about the bell tower and other historical sites on campus. The Individual Written Test was a 30-question, multiple-choice exam. The Math Bowl paired three-person teams in a quiz bowl tournament.
The participating high schools in the Division I competition were Lincoln East, Lincoln Northeast, Lincoln Southeast, Lincoln Southwest, Norris, Omaha Central, Bellevue East, Bellevue West and Seward. The participating high schools in the Division II competition were Bertrand, Brownell-Talbot, Crete, Deshler, Falls City Public, Harvard, Osceola, Thayer Central and Weeping Water.
The contest was sponsored by the Doane College Mathematics Department, Doane Math Club and the Admissions Office.
The 11th Annual Doane triMATHlon Math Contest is being planned for late September 2010. Interested schools can contact Peggy Hart by e-mail (Peg.Hart@Doane.edu).
