Doane College Hosts 20th Anniversary of Czech Concerts -2007

Article Body

Doane's 20th annual Czech Concert will bring traditional, folk and classical Czech music to the stage on Sunday, March 18, 2007 at 1:30 p.m. in Heckman Auditorium.  There will be only one show this year.

The Ostry Family Czech Singers and Variety Show return this year with a new show entitled, "The Czech Dance Band in America."  The singing group showcases the music of the nine children of Michael and Karen Ostry of rural Bruno.  The family performs at numerous Nebraska venues, including Lincoln, Clarkson, Hastings and Prague Czech festivals.

Other featured acts this year include: Dolen and Sara Freeouf of Crete, performing on accordion and violin; Naše Starý, a new act to the concert stage, which includes performances on the button accordion, stomp fiddle and other instruments by a mystery group of musical guests; the Wilber Czech Dancers, instructed by Sheryl Kastanek and Dirk Altman; and the Milligan Legion Czech Brass Band, conducted by Michael Kassik.

Other activities include Musical "Jam" and a Czech Sing-a-Long.

Admission is $2, which purchases a raffle ticket.  Concert proceeds benefit the Czech Scholarship Fund.  This fund has provided scholarships for Doane College students since 1993.

Koláce will be provided by the T.J. Sokols of Wilber.  Wilber wieners, sauerkraut and other refreshments will be served by Chapter CM PEO Crete.  Several vendors will be on hand. Items for sale include costumes and crystal.

Former Doane band director Dr. Hubert Brown initiated the Czech concerts two decades ago when he invited several local Czech-American musicians to perform with the Doane College Band at its annual spring concert.  The success of the event made it an annual feature, which attracts audience members from across Nebraska and several states.
