Doane College advanced to the Semifinal Round of the GPAC Men's Soccer Tournament with a 1-0 victory over Dana College on Tuesday evening in Crete. The win was the Tigers' first in the conference tournament since November 4, 2003 when they defeated Morningside College, 2-1.
The two teams were scoreless through the first half of play with Doane holding the shot advantage, 10-3. In the second half, Doane again out-shot the Vikings, 13-6. The final advantage for Doane was 23-9.
In a physical game that featured 29 fouls, Doane received four yellow cards and Dana picked up two. A second yellow card on Jace Peters not only took the sophomore defender out of the game but forced the Tigers to play a man down in a scoreless ballgame with only 21 minutes remaining.
The disadvantage did little to slow down the Tigers and on a pass in by Jordan Schafer, Devon Strecker headed the ball down and to Kyle Smith. Smith finished off the play with a goal in the 83rd minute of play for what would result as the game-winner.
Chris Kavinsky collected seven saves in the shutout for the Tigers while Dana keeper, Kurtis Kraatz picked up nine saves.
Doane will travel to Hastings on November 7 for a 6:00 PM contest against the Broncos.
