Doane Adds Equestrian Team for 2013-2014
Doane is pleased to announce the college’s first Equestrian Team set to begin this August. “Doane College’s tradition of innovation is sharply focused on the student experience and ensuring the college offers students both well-rounded academic and extracurricular opportunities,” said President Jacque Carter.
The Equestrian Team will be the college’s 24th intercollegiate sport and be open to all students and experience levels. The team will compete in the Intercollegiate Horse Show Association (IHSA), which was established in 1967. There are more than 370 college teams in the IHSA representing over 8,300 riders.
Doane will be competing in Zone 8, Region 3, which includes 12 other institutions such as Colorado College in Colorado Springs, University of Nebraska-Lincoln, U.S. Air Force Academy in Colorado, and the University of Wyoming. The team will compete in Western riding disciplines which emphasize western horsemanship and reining.
Thunderstruck Farms will be the team’s official home, located just 15 minutes from the Crete campus. Owner Tricia Brown, an accomplished horse trainer and riding instructor for 25 years, will serve as the equestrian coach. A beautiful 240-acre farm, Thunderstruck offers many amenities such as indoor and outdoor arenas that will be valuable to the team’s development.
