Doane College will mark Commencement 2013 with a weekend of activities, culminating in the commencement ceremony Sunday, May 19.
Approximately 650 undergraduate and graduate degrees will be awarded during the college's annual Commencement celebration held in Cassel Open Air Theatre, located on Doane's Crete campus.
Commencement begins at 10 a.m. for the School of Graduate and Professional Studies and Graduate Studies in Education on the Lincoln and Grand Island campuses. Dr. Jef Johnston, a 1975 graduate, will be the keynote speaker. Johnston is the Chief Operating Officer at Avenue Scholars Foundation where his work has included the design, implementation, and evaluation of a unique and highly successful program for low income, low performing students as they progress through high school, college, and into a career.
Commencement begins at 2:30 p.m. for the School of Arts and Sciences on the Crete campus. Dr. Nancy S. Berns, a 1992 graduate, will be the keynote speaker. Berns currently teaches at Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa. Her classes include Grief and Loss, Death and Society, Criminology, Forgiveness and Apology, Gender and Violence, and Restorative Justice. She writes a blog for “Psychology Today” and recently released a new book titled “Closure: The Rush to End Grief and What It Costs Us.” A lawn reception will follow the afternoon ceremony.
In the event of heavy rain, commencement will be moved to the George and Sally Haddix Recreation & Athletic Center. Each graduate was provided four rain tickets if the event is moved inside the Haddix Center. Other family may watch remotely from Heckman Auditorium inside the Communications Building. Rain plans will be announced the day of the ceremony and information will be available on Doane's website.
