Cole Paces Tigers Over Dana
Doane improved to 2-0 in the GPAC and 5-1 overall with a 68-62 victory over Dana College on Tuesday evening. The Tigers led 31-26 at halftime.
The two teams battled back and forth through much of the first half as the score was tied seven times, with the last coming at 23-23 with 4:28 remaining in the half.
The Tigers took the lead for good with 3:55 remaining in the first half when Drew Denker found Taylor Siebert for a three-point basket. The Tigers took a five-point lead when Todd Kraus grabbed an offensive rebound and put it back in.
With 2:30 left, Trent Mumma pulled Dana within three points but Denker answered on the following Tiger possession to put the lead back to five at 30-25. Each team collected a free throw in the final two minutes of play.
Coming out of halftime, Dana scored on their first possession. Eric Maassen hit a jumper for the Vikings. The Tigers answered on their next three possessions as they built a nine point lead at 37-28.
The teams exchanged baskets over the next four minutes of play but with the score at 41-33 in favor of Doane, the Vikings went on a 7-0 run to pull within a point of Doane.
Coach Ian Brown took a timeout and the Tigers responded as Tyler Cyboron knocked down a three point basket to increase the Doane lead to four.
Cyboron's basket started a 13-2 run as the Tigers led 56-44 with 8:16 remaining. Brent Cole had eight of his 24 points during the 2:30 run. He hit back-to-back three-point baskets.
Trailing 61-50 with 5:41 remaining, the Vikings put together a 10-0 run over the next 2:29 to pull within a point at 61-60. Again, Brown called timeout for Doane and again, the Tigers responded as Todd Kraus hit a basket to put Doane up by three.
Dana picked up a basket on their next possession but Doane ended the game on a 5-0 run over the final minute to pull out the six point victory.
Cole's 24 points was a game-high. He also added seven rebounds and four assists. Todd Kraus added 11 points with Taylor Siebert contributing nine points.
Jack Lind collected nine rebounds to lead Doane as the Tigers were out-rebounded 49-34. Dana committed 19 turnovers compared to the Tiger's 10.
Dane Cruz had a team-high five assists and three steals.
Eric Maassen led Dana with 15 points and seven rebounds. Doug Huston also picked up seven rebounds and dished out seven assists.
The Tigers will take on York College on Friday, November 24, in Hastings. Tip-off is scheduled for 6:00 pm.
