Ardis Butler James Fund To Help Support International Study
Article Body
A new endowed fund at Doane College will help support international study next year. A grant of $250,000 for the endowment, from the Robert & Ardis James Foundation, has been combined with other funds to create the Ardis Butler James Fund. Proceeds from this permanent, unrestricted fund will annually support Doane's educational program, with the immediate focus on increasing student involvement in study abroad.
Thanks to the establishment of an Office for International Programs in January 2007, Doane students are better able to envision and plan for a semester-long, life-changing experience at a carefully-selected foreign institute or university. Students enrolled in the Honors Program at Doane are expected to undertake such an experience.
"Studying abroad in Italy was such a rich experience for me," said Tracy Fessler, a junior from Geneva, Nebraska, who spent the fall semester of 2008 at the American University of Rome. "The experiences beyond the classroom walls taught me the most. I don't know what life has in store for me, but I never want to quit learning about cultures of the world."
"Helping students develop new perspectives on the world through first-hand experience is an important part of our service to Nebraska and the region," said Jonathan Brand, president of Doane College and a fluent speaker of the French language. "More than ever, the leaders of the future will be those who recognize that America is among many nations and cultures on this shrinking globe."
Unrelated to the new endowed fund, a large number of Doane College students make short trips abroad with their instructors every year with help from the long-standing "travel scholarship" available to Doane juniors and seniors. During 2008-09, these Interterm experiences took Doane students to elementary schools in Thailand, environmentally sensitive areas of South America, the artistic landmarks of Ancient Greece, and other destinations in the U.S.
