Doane College's Butler swimming pool has likely seen its last laps.
Plans to reopen the pool next month changed after the college received updated, increased estimates to install a new federally mandated pool drain and shut-off valve.
"Due to this additional cost, we researched cost and usage of the pool and determined that we can no longer afford to keep the pool operational," said Julie Schmidt, vice president of finance and administration.
It was not an easy decision, she said.
The addition to house a swimming pool was built onto Butler Gymnasium in 1944 and the pool has been used by the Crete community for years.
The College is looking for other alternatives for indoor pool usage options.
Additionally, a new natatorium with an Olympic-size swimming pool is included in future plans for the new Recreation and Athletic Center (RAC), Phase 1 of which is currently under construction on the east side of campus.
"We regret the impact on the community for this decision, but after weighing the facts, we felt it was the best choice," Schmidt said.
While one amenity is closing, construction of new and improved facilities stretches across campus this summer.
The renovation of Frees Hall -- a campus landmark built in 1931 -- is well underway. The $4.6 million project includes the addition of air conditioning and improved heating systems. New walls and floors are being installed, while outside, tuck pointing is underway to restore the building's beauty. Updated construction photos and floor plans can be found at doane.edu/construction/frees/.
On the other side of campus, contractor trailers and fencing signal the start of construction for the new Recreation and Athletic Center. The project will include a state-of-the-art fitness center spanning 10,000 square feet that will serve the entire student body, faculty, staff and the greater Crete community. A new performance gymnasium will provide a high-quality competition arena for basketball and volleyball with seating for 1,200 spectators. The new structure will also include classrooms, office space, locker rooms, training rooms and more.
The new center is expected to be ready for the start of the 2010 academic year.
