Master of Arts in Management

A focus on the field of human resource planning atythe organizational level. Topics include theyanalysis of present systems; familiarization withyhuman resource models, ideas, theories, andyinstruments; forecasting future needs; procurementyof an appropriate labor pool; knowledge of laborylegislation; design and implementation of newysystems; and an examination of current trends inythe human resource field. A course providing students the opportunity toyconduct an in-depth study of human behavior inyorganizations. It focuses on the theory underlyingyindividual behavior in organizations and theyapplication of that theory to managerial issuesythat are present in today's organizations. Majoryareas of study include motivation, groupyprocesses, power and influence, and conflictyresolution. Required core course.

A course designed for non-financial managers,yemphasizing the use of both accounting andyfinancial information as decision-making tools.yStudents learn to assess the financial strength ofyan organization through financial ratio analysis,yand to examine factors considered in financial andyinvestment decisions. The course is taught usingyreadings, problem analyses, and case studies.yRequired core course.

A course which provides students with a basicyfoundation in qualitative and quantitativeyresearch methods. It is a conceptual introductionyto research methods and terminology, and is theyfirst of three required courses that prepareystudents to complete the project or thesisyrequirement. Course content includes anyintroduction to: research and the nature of data,yqualitative and quantitative assumptions, researchydesign, sampling, data collection, data analysis,yethical issues in the treatment of human subjects,ywriting a literature review, the use of anyappropriate style manual, and scholarly writing.yRequired core course.

A course examining leadership and change in 20thycentury America and the effect these changes haveyhad on industry and the management ofyprofit-seeking and non-profit organizations.yParticular emphasis is given to the shift from aymanufacturing economy to one centered on theyservice sector and information sharing. Studentsylearn the role that leaders have played in variousysocial, political, economic, and intellectualymovements, and how those movements, in part, shapeythe challenges and opportunities faced by leadersytoday. Prerequisite: Business 622.

The focus of this course is preparation for theyLeading Edge experience. Students will completeyassigned readings and skills/values assessmentsyand assignments and set preliminary goals forylearning.

This course is a continuation of Bus 786. This isythe second of two terms of formal coursework.yDuring this term, students will continue toydevelop and practice specific coaching skills, andycontinue to work toward their personal andyprofessional goals as they complete coachingysessions with a faculty coach, In addition,ystudents will demonstrate the skills they haveydeveloped by engaging in a collaborative coachingypartnership with another individual.

A course which provides students with the tools toycomplete a quantitative survey study for theyproject or thesis requirement. Topics includeysurvey construction, sampling strategies, theyethics of survey research, data collection, surveyyfollow-up, data entry, and statistical analysisyusing the statistical Package for the SocialySciences (SPSS) computer software. Studentsydevelop research questions for their project orythesis, and construct a pilot survey in thisycourse. The will administer the survey, enter theydata on SPSS, run the analysis, interpret theyresults and present their findings (in bothywritten and oral form). This is the second courseyin the sequence of three to prepare students forythe project of thesis requirement. Prerequisite:yBusiness 680.

Allows students to demonstrate a compilation ofythe knowledge gained from coursework completed inythe Master of Arts in Management program.yStudents further develop their knowledge of ayparticular are of management relevant to theiryresearch interests. Course content includes theyfollowing: devleloping a research proposal;yidentifying the target audience; identifying theysignificance of the study; choosing a sample andymethodology; ethical considerations and informedyconsent; collecting, analyzing and interpretingythe data; and writing the project or thesis.yPrerequisite; Business 681 or 682.

This course explores the important roleyentrepreneurs play in local communities and theynational economy. It focuses on the uniqueycharacteristics of successful entrepreneurs andytheir ability to identify, analyze, and cultivateyan idea for a business opportunity. Studentsylearn the processes for analyzing new ideas, howyto conduct industry and competitor analysis, howyto assess a new venture?s viability, and how toyobtain financing to support the launch of a newyventure. The goal of the course is to giveystudents the knowledge and skills to actually doysomething with good ideas they have for making anyimpact on organizations and to understand theyentrepreneur?s role as a change agent.
