A methods course building upon the foundation laidyin Language Arts and Reading I. It familiarizesyelementary (including early childhood K-3) andymiddle grade educators with the currentyinformation about the process of teaching readingythrough a balanced approach. Students will exploreyinstructional approaches including directyinstruction teaching strategies such as systematicyphonics instruction and mini-lessons on readingystrategies, shared reading, guided reading,yliterature groups, as well as different managementystrategies for setting up an effective readingyprogram. Children's and adolescents' literature isyreviewed as to its application for teachingyreading. Emphasis will be placed on implementingystate and national reading and language artsystandards. Prerequisite: Education 211 and 311, orypermission.
