Information Systems

An introduction to the science and art ofyimplementing solutions to problems using ayhigh-level programming language. Upon completionyof this course, the student will be able to designysolutions to a variety of problems using top-downyand structured design techniques and implementythose solutions using programming constructs suchyas branching, loops, arrays, and functions oryprocedures. Prerequisite: Mathematics 105 oryequivalent.

Provides an introduction to the field ofyinformation systems and an understanding of theydecision process and how information is used forydecision support in organizations. Students willydevelop an understanding of decision theory andypractice essential for providing viableyinformation to the organization and will be ableyto identify the various types of informationysystems. Prerequisite: Information Science andyTechnology 145. Offered spring terms.

Provides students with the knowledge of dataycommunications and networking concepts, includingytelecommunications architectures, protocols,yhardware, and software. In addition, the analysis,ydesign, and implementation of networks inyorganizations such as businesses and schools willybe examined and experienced. Prerequisite:yInformation Science and Technology 146. Offeredyalternate fall terms.

This course will survey techniques and tools usedyin the application of engineering principles toythe development of software systems. From thoseysurveyed, a software lifecycle model will beyutilized in developing a modern software product.yUpon completion of this course students will haveygained the knowledge and skills necessary to applyyengineering principles, techniques, and tools inythe development of software. Prerequisite: ISTy146 or permission. Offered alternate spring terms.

A two-semester, interdisciplinary, laboratory oryfield research project to be used for partialycompletion of the senior research requirement forymajors within the Math, Science and IST Division,yas part of the major requirements. RES 495-496 isyan option for those research areas that areyinterdisciplinary. Specific requirements forycompletion of the courses will be at theydiscretion of the research advisor but areyintended to follow as closely as possible theyspecific requirements as stated elsewhere in theycatalog within the major requirements.

A research or experiential project developed underythe guidance of a department faculty member toyculminate a student's study of information scienceyand technology. Completion of the project,yincluding a written and oral presentation,ydemonstrates the skills expected of a Doaneyinformation science and technology student,yincluding a solid understanding of informationyscience and technology concepts; the confidenceyand skills to 1)work with existing and emergingycomputing technology; 2)efficiently research andylearn an unknown topic or solve an unknownyproblem; and 3)effectively communicate, includingywriting, speaking, and listening. This course mayybe taken twice. Prerequisite: Information Scienceyand Technology student with junior or seniorystanding and permission.
