An analysis of the development of civilization inyEurope and elsewhere. Particular attention will beypaid to the evolution of a modern mind set. Thisycourse focuses on the theme of how humanyperceptions changed over time--a key component ofythe very notion of "civilization." As a result ofythese courses, students will gain an understandingyof the Western and non-Western heritages in termsyof their origins, development, values, andydistinctive qualities. Students will also gain anyunderstanding of the nature of social, political,yeconomic, and psychological forces and how theyyaffect us. First term: 1300-1815. Second term:y1815 to the present.
