Physics

August 17, 2012 - 10:02am -- Chris.Wentworth

Do you want to look inside an atom, visualize the sound of a trumpet, or gaze on a supernova? Do you want to design a rocket engine that sends people into outer space or program a computer to simulate life? These are just a few of the things a physics major might do.

We offer both a physics major and minor. Our curriculum emphasizes doing science, not just learning about science, so all courses give students the opportunity to work on experimental and theoretical projects. Many opportunities also exist to work with faculty on research projects while at Doane.

A special education major helps prepare you for teaching children and youth with mild or moderate mental handicaps, learning disabilities or behavioral disorders. Teachers graduating from this program have certification for teaching kindergarten through 12th grade.

Students may obtain certification in both elementary education and special education. A coaching endorsement may also be added to the teaching majors.

Sociology

August 17, 2012 - 9:26am -- nathan.erickson

Students in sociology learn about urban and rural life, family patterns and relationships, social class, social movements, crime and the criminal justice system, and contemporary social issues. A sociology major provides an intellectual background for students considering careers in law, medicine, business, consulting, education, or just about any other profession.

English as a Second Language

August 17, 2012 - 9:21am -- Lisa.Vargason

An English as a Second Language degree is intended to provide an education in the teaching of English to speakers of other languages. This major does not provide certification for American public school teaching, but is intended to prepare students for teaching English in non-English-speaking countries. Internships through Doane's International Program provide unique training opportunities for students in the ESOL studies program.

Elementary Education

August 17, 2012 - 9:14am -- Lisa.Vargason

Visit the College of Education Undergraduate website.

To become a successful elementary school teacher and shape the future of our youth, you need the support of a valuable elementary education program.

Spanish

The Spanish program gives you insight into the second most spoken language in the world. With an increased demand for Spanish-speaking people in a multitude of fields such as business and communication, having a Spanish degree proves marketable - especially when paired with another subject. Also, students don't just learn the language.

Physical Science

The physical sciences include physics, chemistry, meteorology, astronomy and geology. A physical science major allows you to gain a broad understanding of these areas and prepare for a career in teaching or in the health industry.

Three tracks are available for this major:

German

The German program is designed to serve a variety of goals. It gives you the insight into one of the world's great languages and literatures. It provides an additional marketable skill for majors in several fields including business, sociology, psychology, education, and communication. A major in German is required for certification to teach the language in high school. Also, Doane is one of the only colleges in the United States that make it a requirement to study abroad for at least a semester if you're going to major in a Modern Language.
