Pre-Engineering

September 30, 2012 - 9:38pm -- Nancy.Weyers

Our pre-professional engineering program, allows you to combine the best aspects of a small college experience with the benefits of a professional engineering degree. Students who complete the program receive a bachelor's degree from Doane College in a major such as mathematics, physics or computer science and a bachelor's of engineering from an accredited engineering school.

Program Offerings

Doane has dual degree programs in engineering with:

Computer Science

August 17, 2012 - 10:33am -- Matt.Shadoin

With some of the best-rated jobs in the nation, and five of the top ten highest paying jobs, the computer science field is vibrant, exciting, challenging and growing. There are also many stimulating graduate school opportunities in computer science.

The Department of Information Science and Technology is an excellent way to prepare you for entry into this field. Our program is comprehensive, unique, and flexible.

Social Science

August 17, 2012 - 10:11am -- Lisa.Vargason

A social science major allows you to teach any course within social studies subjects in any 7-12 school in Nebraska, as well as in most other states. The major, also a teaching endorsement, is comprised of courses including sociology, economics, political science, history, geography and psychology.

Students not seeking to be certified to teach in secondary schools with a social science major generally continue by enrolling in a graduate school program in their area of interest.

Political Science

August 17, 2012 - 10:07am -- Matt.Shadoin

A political science major studies the use of authority and influence in society within legal, political, human and governmental contexts. This flexible program is designed to:

Physics

August 17, 2012 - 10:02am -- Chris.Wentworth

Do you want to look inside an atom, visualize the sound of a trumpet, or gaze on a supernova? Do you want to design a rocket engine that sends people into outer space or program a computer to simulate life? These are just a few of the things a physics major might do.

We offer both a physics major and minor. Our curriculum emphasizes doing science, not just learning about science, so all courses give students the opportunity to work on experimental and theoretical projects. Many opportunities also exist to work with faculty on research projects while at Doane.

Special Education

August 17, 2012 - 9:55am -- Lisa.Vargason

A special education major helps prepare you for teaching children and youth with mild or moderate mental handicaps, learning disabilities or behavioral disorders. Teachers graduating from this program have certification for teaching kindergarten through 12th grade.

Students may obtain certification in both elementary education and special education. A coaching endorsement may also be added to the teaching majors.

Physical Education

August 17, 2012 - 9:42am -- Lisa.Vargason

A physical education major prepares you for professional experiences including:

  • physical education teacher
  • fitness club management
  • personal fitness training
  • athletic training

As a physical education teacher, you must pursue an additional teaching major. You will also choose one emphasis from the following:

Sociology

August 17, 2012 - 9:26am -- nathan.erickson

Sociology seeks to understand all aspects of human social behavior, including the behavior of individuals and the social dynamics of small groups, institutions and societies.

Students in sociology learn about urban and rural life, family patterns and relationships, social class, social movements, crime and the criminal justice system, and contemporary social issues. A sociology major provides an intellectual background for students considering careers in law, medicine, business, consulting, education, or just about any other profession.

English as a Second Language

August 17, 2012 - 9:21am -- Lisa.Vargason

An English as a Second Language degree is intended to provide an education in the teaching of English to speakers of other languages. This major does not provide certification for American public school teaching, but is intended to prepare students for teaching English in non-English-speaking countries. Internships through Doane's International Program provide unique training opportunities for students in the ESOL studies program.
