Fred Beile Competition Arena

Fred BeileIn 1955 Fred Beile came to Doane.  And the track and field program changed forever.

Beile began his career as the head cross country coach and assistant track coach, assuming head coaching duties in 1973 and head coach of the new women's program in 1979.  During Beile's time as head coach, the Tiger women's team won two team National Titles (2001, 2002) while he coached 327 All-Americans, 60 individual National Champions, and 101 All-American Scholar Athletes.

The women's team won national outdoor championships in 2001 and 2002, while the men's program claimed the runner-up spot in the 2001 NAIA indoor meet.  Thirteen of his teams finished in the top four nationally.  On the conference level his teams won more than 60 track and field and cross country titles combined.

For Beile, the pride isn't in the numbers-it's in the students. That's his true  joy, teaching them the real value of the program is the pursuit of excellence as an attitude. That they are not limited by their own expectations. Lessons that live on long after Doane.

Only Beile's list of students he has helped develop is longer than the awards he has earned in 40+ years of coaching. Beile was named NAIA National Coach-of-the-Year six times, was inducted into the NAIA Track and Field Hall of Fame and Doane's Hall of Fame, and named Lincoln Journal Star State College Coach of the Year, as well as Omaha World-Herald State College Coach-of-the-Year.  He was past president NAIA track coaches association, member of the board of directors for USA track and field, and member of the USTCA board of directors.

In 2002 Beile "retired" but is a constant presence at Doane.  He continues to coach the Tigers sprints, hurdles and relay teams.

Renovation and Expansion of Fuhrer Fieldhouse

Fuhrer Field House was built in 1969 and for its time served the athletic program well.  Although still functional, Fuhrer is inadequate for the number of athletic teams and students we have on campus today.

The 20,694 sq. ft. expansion will provide:

  • An arena and 200 meter track surface that accommodates our large track teams
  • Opportunities for concurrent use on the inside of the track
  • A new lobby, concessions area, public restrooms and a large meeting space
  • Time for recreational use, precluded now due to teams practicing late into the night
  • A regulation track and more seating, which opens Doane to hosting conference and regional competitions
  • A more comprehensive recreation and athletic space to meet the needs of students and our community
