As spring approaches, campus is gearing up for one of its newest and fastest growing traditions: Relay For Life. Doane is a college built on a tradition of excellence in academics, leadership, athletics, and fine arts. Compared to other long-established organizations and groups, Doane’s Relay is young, having just celebrated its 10th event in the spring of 2011. But even in that short time, Doane’s Relay has captured the attention of Relays everywhere, finishing first in the nation in per capita fundraising four times, and second in the nation once, all in the last five years. These accomplishments brought the National Collegiate Training Scout Team to Doane’s Relay in 2010 to learn its methods and to use it as an example for other college Relays. With such respect, it is easy to see that as Relay moves into its second decade at Doane, it is destined to join our Alma Mater’s other beloved traditions.
In the true spirit of Doane, Relay For Life is an event that brings campus together, with student, faculty, and community participants from every corner of the college. Each year, more Alumni come back to the event, turning Relay into a Spring Homecoming. As an alumnus, it an encouragement to see scores of current students in action, working to make an impact on their campus, their community, and beyond.
This year’s event will be held on Friday, April 13th in Fuhrer Fieldhouse, with the opening ceremony at 6:00 p.m. and the Relay Committee invites all Alumni to attend. There will be an Alumni Team again this year and we invite you to come back and join. For those who were at Doane before Relay, we’d love to introduce you to Doane’s newest tradition. For Doane’s more recent Alumni, you’re welcome back to see the progress Relay has made in ten years.
