Perlman, Schmidt, Bailey Trio Performance
Pianist Navah Perlman, cellist Zuill Bailey and violinist Giora Schmidt graced the stage Oct. 15 in Whitcomb Lee Conservatory. Hailed for their performances of the chamber music repetoire, the trio have presented energetic and passionate performances from major halls to festivals to universities across the country.
Community Dinners
Started in 2007, the tradition of serving free Community Dinners in Crete on the last Monday of each month continues this academic year. Each month a sponsor helps pay for and prepare the dinner, from campus organizations like Students for Change to the President's Office and the Office of Advancement, the numbers of people attending - and eating - has grown.
Youth Camp Visits Prairie Research Site
About two dozen students from grades 5 – 8 visited the Aldrich Prairie Research site last summer as part of week-long environmental camp sponsored by Groundwater Foundation in Lincoln. Youth Program Coordinator Carla Otredosky, a 2000 Doane graduate, coordinated the visit which included various groundwater activities in addition to a site tour, lesson on insect collecting and prairie dog observation by Russ Soucheck, associate professor of biology and geology, and environmental science major Courtney Woodman.
Master Series Lecture
Shaylene Smith '91 returned to the Crete campus Sept. 23 as part of the Hansen Leadership Program, which encourages alumni who master their chosen field to come back to Doane to share their experiences. Smith earned a law degree in 1994 and took substantial coursework in Political Science at the graduate level. She shared her rise to partner in two different law firms as well her community leadership experiences.
Doane Drama Conference
Over 200 junior and senior high school students from all over the state turned out for the Doane Drama Conference on Oct. 6 at the Crete campus. Attendees watched the production of "Coram Boy", went to workshops and some auditioned for scholarships.
Science, Math and IST Colloquium
"Ricker's recruitment model: form stability to chaos" was the topic of Division of Science, Mathematics and Information and Science Technology colloquium event on Oct. 27. Dr. David Logan, a mathematics professor from the University of Nebraska Lincoln was on hand to talk about the Ricker recruitment model, which represents one of the fundamental ideas in ecology and nonlinear dynamical systems coming out of the 20th Century.
Credit 101
College students get credit card offers in the mail all the time, but they may not know how important their credit history will be in the future. That's why the Office of Financial Aid and the National Student Loan Program (NSLP) teamed up in November to help students learn about credit history from how your credit score is calculated to understanding your credit report and more.
ROBOlympics
By the name alone, you can tell this is a serious competition. In November, faculty and students from the Department of Information Science and Technology hosted teams of high school students as they designed, built and programmed robots within a single four-hour period. The trial event is used to prototype events that will be used in the annual ROBOlympics course. And it's fun, too.
'Socialism' presented by Dr. Les Manns, Faculty in Residence
What's in our future? It's a big question and Dr. Les Manns, professor of economics, provided some facts on November 19 to help people make decisions about our economic future under a Barack Obama presidency. Sponsored by the Hansen Leadership program, discussion centered around the recent U.S. economy and the economic plan of then President-Elect Obama.
