Q. Why are changes being made to the credit card payment procedures?
A. Credit cards will be accepted by Nelnet, a vendor contracted by the College that charges a fee for its service. The convenience fee amount for each transaction was determined by our vendor, and Doane will not receive any part of the service charge. While credit card payments offer convenience to students and their families, the cost to the College became unreasonably expensive. Therefore, the College decided to require those who use this convenience to cover its cost.
Our vendor, Nelnet, is also certified to process credit card transactions in compliance with Payment Card Industry Data Security Standards (PCI DSS), another very important factor in moving credit card processing online.
Q. Are other colleges and universities making similar changes?
A. Many colleges and universities are either charging a convenience fee or have stopped accepting all credit cards.
Q. Is there a way I can avoid paying a convenience fee?
A. You can avoid paying the 2.75% convenience fee by paying online with an e-check, which is an electronic debit to your checking or savings account. For full payments, you may also mail a check for your balance due to Doane University, Business Office, 1014 Boswell Ave., Crete, NE 68333, or bring a check to the Business office in the Padour-Walker Administration Building on the Crete Campus. Please always include your student ID number on the check, and allow 7-10 days for USPS processing when mailing a payment. Checks, e-checks, and credit cards are also accepted in person on the Lincoln, and Grand Island campuses.
Q. Are debit cards accepted?
A. Yes, all debit cards are accepted, however they are treated the same as credit cards, subject to the 2.75% convenience fee.
Q. Can I make a credit card payment over the phone?
A. Yes, at this time you can still pay with your credit card over the phone by calling 402.826.8250 during business hours. Our cashiers will also use Nelnet's secure product, therefore, the 2.75% convenience fee will be charged on these transactions. E-check information can also be accepted over the phone, with no fee.
Q. Are there payment options other than via the Internet?
A. Doane will continue to accept cash and check payments, as well as e-checks, in the Business office in the Padour-Walker Administration Building on the Crete Campus as well as payments by check received through the U.S. mail, with no fees. Credit cards will also continue to be accepted at the Student Accounts window, with the 2.75% convenience fee. Checks, e-checks, and credit cards are also accepted in person on the Lincoln, and Grand Island campuses.
Q. Are there payment plans available?
A. Yes, FACTS Payment Plans are available online, via Nelnet. Short-term plans (one to six months) are available for a one-time charge of $25. Long-term plans (seven to twelve months) are $45. Both plans are interest free. Payments are charged on the 5th or the 20th of each month, and you can choose either free e-check withdrawals from your checking/savings account, or pay with a Visa, Mastercard, Discover, or American Express credit card, subject to the 2.75% convenience fee.
