Honorary Societies

Alpha Kappa Delta is an international sociology honorary society founded to promote service and research to humankind. Membership is open to sociology majors and minors or those who have completed four sociology courses with a GPA of 3.0 in those courses and cumulative GPA of 3.0 and rank in the top 35% of their class.

Alpha Lambda Delta is a national honorary organization for women. Qualifications for membership include freshman standing with a minimum GPA of 3.5 in the first semester at Doane, with at least 14 graded credits; or a 3.5 average in the first year, with at least 28 graded credits. Interterm and/or summer credits are not included.

Alpha Psi Omega is a national honorary organization that recognizes outstanding leadership and commitment in the theatre. Members are selected on a point system based upon their participation in the theatre.

Beta Beta Beta (Tri Beta) is a national honor society for students interested in biology. The Doane College group is known as the Iota Mu chapter. Activities include tours of research centers, field trips, fund-raising, and presentations by outside speakers on topics of biological interest. Qualifications for associate membership include an interest in biology. An active membership requires three completed courses in biology with at least a 3.0 average.

Cardinal Key, a national honor society, acts as a service organization to the college and community and recognizes the achievements of its members. Some of the society's projects include a Big-Sis/Little-Sis program, an annual fund-raiser to purchase books for the library, and fund-raisers for various charitable organizations. Qualification for membership is determined at the end of the sophomore year based on a cumulative grade point average, participation in various activities, and special honors.

Lambda Pi Eta is a national honor society for communication studies. To be eligible for membership, students must have completed 60 semester hours and have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 and an overall GPA of 3.25 in at least 12 semester hours of communication studies courses.

Phi Alpha Theta is a national honor society for junior and senior students who have distinguished themselves in history. Qualifications are at least four courses in history with a GPA of 3.01 or higher in all history courses, an average of 3.00 in two-thirds of the remainder of the courses, and a rank in the upper 35 percent of the class.

Phi Eta Sigma is a national honor society for freshmen men founded on the Doane campus in 1949. This honor society serves to foster the pursuit of academic excellence. Qualification for membership includes a freshman standing with a minimum GPA of 3.5 in the first semester at Doane, with at least 14 graded credits; or a 3.5 average in the first year, with at least 28 graded credits. Credits earned in interterm and/or summer are not included.

Pi Kappa Delta is a national honor society for students involved in competitive speech. More information about this honor society will be available during the fall semester.

Pi Lambda Theta is the oldest national honor society in education. Its purpose is to recognize individuals of superior scholastic achievement and high potential for leadership. To qualify, a member must be pursuing a career in professional education and must have at least a 3.5 GPA on a 4.0 scale.

Psi Chi is the national psychology honor society, founded in 1929 for the purpose of encouraging, stimulating, and maintaining excellence in scholarship and advancing the science of psychology. Membership is open to undergraduate men and women who are making the study of psychology one of their major interests and who meet the minimum qualifications: l) completion of eight semester hours of psychology, or six semester hours and registration for at least two additional semester hours of psychology; 2) registration for a major or minor in psychology, or for a program psychological in nature; 3) ranking not lower than the highest 35 percent of their class in general scholarship and demonstration of superior scholarship in psychology; 4) high standards of personal behavior; and 5) two-thirds affirmative vote of those present at a regular meeting of the chapter.

Sigma Tau Delta chapter of this national English honor society was founded in 1930 to promote scholarship in the field of English. Opportunities exist for national prizes, publications, and scholarships. Qualifications for membership include a junior standing with a major or minor in English, a 3.0 average in English, and standing in the upper 35 percent of the class.
