Meet the Staff

Sherri Hanigan, director of Student Support Services

Sherri administrates a Federal TRIO grant, which provides cultural enrichment activities and academic support services to eligible participants.  She also does academic "coaching" with participants who want to improve their academic performance.

She lives with her husband on an acreage between Crete and Lincoln.  Her family has a vineyard with 600 plants adding an additional 200 plants each year.  Both of her sons graduated from Doane.  Sherri amuses herself with knitting, reading and gardening when she's not at work.

Karen Sookram, Ph.D.; director of the Doane Learning Center

Karen is a graduate from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln where she obtained her doctorate degree in Education. She serves as an administrator in the Academic Support Center.  Her responsibilities are to work with the students to improve their academic performance, and to prepare them for graduate studies. In Karen's spare time, she enjoys reading, water sports, and traveling with her family.

Roy Scheele, Associate Professor of English; Poet in Residence

Roy teaches courses both in the English Department and the Academic Support Center. His poems, essays, and interviews have been widely published. Roy holds a Bachelor of Arts and master's degree from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and did an additional year of graduate study in English at the University of Texas. He enjoys reading, gardening, and making miniature junk sculptures in his spare time.

Lisa Wells, office manager

Lisa assists the project director and staff in record-keeping, budget matters, scheduling appointments, and coordinating project activities. Her primary project responsbilities include tutor assignments and cultural events. Lisa started at Doane in 1990 in Perkins Library and moved to the Academic Support Center in 1999. She enjoys spending time with her family, reading, and watching movies.

Tere Francis, Academic/Reading Specialist, instructor in the English department

Tere teaches the College and Reading Strategies, Reading for Comprehension, Reading for Speed, ESL Methods, and Freshman Writing seminar courses. She also does academic counseling for Student Support Services. During the summers, Tere teaches graduate courses for the Master of Education program. She also helps mentor the TRiO Student Leadership Team. Tere spent part of her summer teaching ESL methods courses on the Navajo Nation. She loves to read, watch movies, and travel. A favorite hobby is giving Victorian tea parties.
