Doane's Math Department is known for its friendly atmosphere and outstanding faculty members. We are unique for the region for the following reasons:
• We have approximately 40 math majors ~ a very large percentage in comparison to other schools.
• Mathematics is an easy major to combine with other majors. We've had students double-major in business, computer science, physics, biology, chemistry, political science, Spanish, philosophy, and art.
• We have three full-time math professors, and two half-time professors, all specializing in different areas of math.
• We have 100% placement of our students who become high school math teachers, and 95% placement of other math majors in jobs.
• We send an average of 1 graduate per year to graduate school in mathematics or statistics.
• We offer an "Actuarial Emphasis" which trains future actuaries. We pay for actuarial exams, are accredited by the Society of Actuaries to offer VEE (Valuation by Educational Experience) credit, and offer a class that helps students pass their first exam. In the past 3 years, we've had 4 students graduate directly into excellent actuarial jobs!
• Senior math majors complete an individual, undergraduate research project. Then, Doane hosts the "Symposium in Undergraduate Mathematics" each spring, and our seniors present their research to other math students from colleges throughout the state.
