Physics

Students Receiving Personal Attention

Do you want to look inside an atom, visualize the sound of a trumpet, or gaze on a supernova?  Do you want to design a rocket engine that sends people into outer space or program a computer to simulate life?  These are just a few of the things a physics major might do.

We offer a physics major and minor, described on the catalog page.  Our curriculum emphasizes doing science, not just learning about science, so all courses give students the opportunity to work on experimental and theoretical projects. Many opportunities exist to work with faculty on research projects while at Doane.

Projects Supported by the Department of Physics

The links below go to educational projects of national interest developed by faculty and students in the Department of Physics.

Doane Physics Video Library
This library contains video clips of physics-related phenomena in Quicktime and Flash formats. The clips can be used with videoanalysis software to obtain data. This collection was chosen to be a quality peer-reviewed resource by MERLOT (www.merlot.org).

The Humanized Physics Project
This NSF supported curriculum development project seeks to create an algebra-based introductory physics curriculum motivated by exploring how the human body works.
