About
Gamma Phi Iota
Gamma Phi Iota was founded in 1908. In the fall of that year, ten
girls got together and formed a good fellowship band. These ten girls were
considered the charter members of this newly formed society.
Meetings were held every alternative Saturday behind closed
doors at the home of some member of the society. Their purpose was for
parliamentary drill and literary work, both for pleasure and profit. They
eventually achieved permanent organization status. They named their
organization Gesellshaft, Freundshaft, Schertz – the German words meaning
companionship, friendship, and fun.
In 1939, the original name was changed to Gamma Phi Iota.
These Greek letters were selected because they represent the first letters
of the words for scholarship, friendship, and fun in the Greek
language. Gamma Phi Iota colors are gold, which symbolizes
gaiety and white, which symbolizes purity. The symbol of Gamma Phi
Iota is the arrow, which always points upward and to the left and
represents our goal of striving upward. The bunny is the Gamma
mascot. The Gamma Phi Iota flower is the daffodil, which symbolizes
the freshness of spring.
Gamma Phi Iota provides an opportunity for
fellowship and work to promote a oneness among girls who are striving for
the same general goals. Gammas encourage personal individuality, meaning we
desire every member to have their own unique and distinct personality. We
have chosen the thirteenth chapter of Corinthians as our scripture
because it truly represents the spirit of our sorority. |
